34yrs old Dolapo Bolade surprised many of his friends and family members recently when his wife, Adebisi, was delivered of their first baby. A highly sociable young man who regularly attended parties and kept a network of revellers as buddies, there were expectations of a big gig from almost every quarter immediately the business man’s daughter, Ifeoluwa, arrived.
Men, women, young and old – all who knew him had their eyes fixed on August 31, 2016. But when the day finally arrived, Bolade shocked everyone…
“Immediately people heard that my wife had been delivered of a baby, a lot of them started calling me, asking how big the naming ceremony was going to be, whether there would be aso ebi and which musician I was hiring to perform at the event.
“There was too much expectation but inside of me, I just laughed because a lot of these people don’t seem to understand what I am passing through at the moment,” Bolade said during a friendly chat with a Punch reporter earlier in the week.
“On the eve of the naming ceremony, some friends called and even came to my house to find out how I was preparing for the next day,” he continued. “But they were all surprised when I revealed that there was not going to be any elaborate ceremony. What we simply did on that Tuesday morning was to give the baby a name, no ceremony whatsoever followed,” he added.
This is the reality in many homes today, with the poor state of the economy. If you want to do a party, the things you could buy with 50k before, now even with N110k you will struggle to meet up.
Those into catering and events planning are already complaining of low patronage.

The 7th Army Division rescued no fewer than 30 civilians, including a six-day-old infant child, in Dikwa, Borno State yesterday.The announcement was given to members of the media in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, through electronic message from the 7th Division spokesman, Colonel IT Gusau.He stated that ''as a result of ongoing operations, under the aegis of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE, to clear Dikwa and its environs from Boko Haram terrorists. The troops of 7th Division yesterday rescued 30 internally displaced persons from the hands of the terrorists in KWAYABE and WUFE wards of DIKWA LGA in Borno State.''The spokesman added that among the rescued ''include 21 children and a 6 day old infant, 7 women including and 3 nursing mothers as well as two elderly male adults.''Nigerian troops reclaimed Dikwa town from Boko Haram terrorists last weekend after Dikwa had spent months under their control.Our troops also discovered a training center inside the vandalized and looted Palace of the Shehu of Dikwa where weapons and anti-aircraft training was being taught to fresh Boko Haram recruits.

The Ooni of Ife, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade is dead. He died today in London at the age of 85.Oba Sijuwade was the fifth Ooni of Ife. He climbed unto the throne on December 6, 1980. As the Ooni of Ife, he presided over the Ife territory, in the South West Nigeria but his influence went far and beyond.He came into office at the height of the supremacyfight amongst Yoruba Obas. The crisis pitched him against the Alaafin of Oyo. It festered on until Osun state was carved out of the old Oyo State.Before he became an Oba, he studied at Abeokuta Grammar School and later at Northampton College in the United Kingdom before he became a manager at Leventis stores.Oba Sijuwade’s term as Oba was characterised with political treachery, as he was one of the traditional rulers that meddled in politics. He was infamously instrumental to the annulment of June12, 1993, elections won by late Moshood Abiola. The Ooni  had also been severally fingered in the failed effort to have Senator Iyiola Omisore elected the governor of Osun state in 2011. He survived by several wives and children.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that the national cut off point for screening of candidates for admission remained the minimum expectation that each candidate desirous of university admission should have.This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos.According to the statement, the attention of the board has been drawn to the challenge experienced by some candidates who could not access the University of Lagos site to register for the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The statement said that the board sincerely sympathised with their frustration.
“We want to seize this opportunity to state that our attention has been drawn to the agitation by some parents and students who turned out for the registration for the post JAMB screening exercise for the candidates. “We sympathise with them but wish to state categorically that the national cut off point is just the minimum expectation that each candidate desirousof university admission should have.“However, universities are at liberty to go higher than 180, depending on their peculiarities and the performance of candidates who chose them.“For instance, if over 10,000 candidates who made Unilag their first choice scored 250 and above, it will be difficult for them to go lower than 250 when they are to admit only about 7000.“I wish to state that a time will come when some universities will go up to 300 as their cut off mark, depending on the performance,’’ the statement said.It explained that because of the development, the board decided that some of the candidates who chose such institutions but fall below their cut off marks should not miss out, hence the need to send them to other schools.The statement added that such a gesture should rather be applauded, instead of condemning the Dibu Ojerinde-led JAMB management.

Barely two months after the exit of her husband from office, former First Lady and wife of immediate past president, Dame Patience Jonathan has allegedly suffered ignominy and molestation at the hands of security operatives and aviation officials at the Port Harcourt International airport.Dame Jonathan, who was on her way to the burial of her late Chief Security Officer (CSO), Tamuno Jacob Igbomie, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, was on Wednesday prevented from entering the VIP Lounge of the airport, aprivilege she had enjoyed in the last 16 years.The former First Lady arrived Port Harcourt International Airport and made for the VIP lounge as had been the norm and should still be accorded her given her status in the society. However, she was practically locked out andprevented from accessing the lounge.An eye witness, who narrated the incident, said that efforts by the former president’s wife and her personal aides to pacify the security agents at the airport to allow the long known protocol etiquette stand were rebuffed as they stood their ground, insisting that they were acting on orders from Abuja,New Telegraph further learnt that on her return from the burial, the same drama played out, prompting observers to ask if the presidency could give such a directive against the personality and family of the immediate past president.The deceased former CSO to Patience Jonathan was allegedly shot dead byunknown a$$ailants about three weeks ago.Igbomie’s corpse was found in his Honda Accord car along Airport Road, Abuja with all his phones, wallet and other personal effects in the car untouched.

The President was reacting to latest terrorist attacks in Jos, Kano, and Zaria. The statement quoted the President as saying that he was convinced of his position because of the recent positive developments in the nation’s security forces. He therefore urged Nigerians to remain security conscious and be swift in reporting suspicious movements around them to security agents. “The President is convinced that with recent increase in troops deployment, improvements in the supply of arms and equipment to the military, as well as the ongoing effort to mobilise greater international cooperation and support, the end of Boko Haram and terrorism in Nigeria is in sight. “He calls on Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons to security agents as his administration continues to give the highest possible priority to eradicating Boko Haram and ensuring greater security of lives and property across the country,” the statement read in part. Buhari consoled all Nigerians who lost relatives in the latest terrorist atrocities in Jos, Kano, and Zaria, as well as those who were injured in the attacks. He, however, urged all Nigerians not to be unduly disheartened by what he called the seeming resurgence of terrorist attacks and atrocities in the country. He said his administration remained committed to overcoming the challenges of insecurity, terrorism and insurgency as quickly as possible. The statement added, “Already, the intensified onslaught by the military on terrorists’ strongholds has led to significant seizures of weapons and vehicles, a blockage of their sources of arms and ammunition, and a decimation of their fighting men. “President Buhari assures Nigerians of the ability and readiness of the country’s armed forces and security agencies to contain the frantic resort by the terrorists to attacks on soft targets such as crowds and places of worship.”
